Teaching Development and Language Enhancement Grant 25-28 Drama and Communication: Enhancing Chinese Language Proficiency, Personal Growth, and Cross-Institutional Collaboration through Performance Lecture Series

Living on Stage: A Drama Appreciation Lecture by Mr. Lau Shau Ching of the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre

Hosted by CLEP, School of Chinese, HKU, and Chinese Language Courses, Department of Chinese Language and Literature, CUHK, the TDLEG project "Drama and Communication: Enhancing Chinese Language Proficiency, Personal Growth, and Cross-Institutional Collaboration through Performance" officially launched in November 2025. The program's first lecture invited Mr. Lau Shau Ching Bobby, Assistant Artistic Director of the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre and a renowned stage actor, as the guest speaker. The lectures were held on November 7 at YIA-LT7, CUHK and on November 8 at CYPP4, HKU. Over 350 students from both universities registered to participate.

During the lecture, Mr. Lau shared three ways for actors to observe life: opening the senses to observe, loosening the mind to understand, and opening the heart to empathize. He combined his own growth, acting career, and creative experience to vividly explain and demonstrate these three methods. Even for those who are not professional actors, these three theatrical training techniques can enhance communication and expression in daily life. After the lecture, students enthusiastically asked questions and stayed for further discussion. Some CLEP course students who serving as student assistants in this project also consulted the guest on stage design knowledge to enrich their ongoing research plans with professional insights.
